Body Beast | Les Mills Combat | ?? | Hybrid

My Les Mills Pump program is complete.  Another one in the books.  I am now a few weeks from running my first half marathon.  I am starting to plan for my next workout program once the half marathon is complete.   Hmmmm, I may need some feedback from you.  What do you think?  Body Beast, Les Mills Combat and ….??  If women can do Body Beast then men can certainly do…… _______.

After taking on a few smaller runs, I felt it was time to take on a new challenge.  I registered for my first half marathon!  As soon as I did that I knew that I needed a strict schedule to keep me on track.  Leading up to this decision were numerous rounds of P90X, a couple 5k’s, the Get Lucky 7k, Get in Gear 10k and a mix of INSANITY, Asylum, Turbo Fire, a Tough Mudder and now Les Mills Pump.  Yes, I did say Turbo Fire.  It remains as one the toughest for me, mainly due to the amount of coordination that is required.

INSANITY vs. P90X – which one is better?

Ding, ding, ding!  In one corner, we have P90X and in the other corner INSANITY.  You’ve heard a lot about each of the Beachbody home workout programs but just in case you haven’t:  INSANITY was created by Shaun T and is a high intensity cardio home workout program that promises incredible results in 60 days.  It includes plyometric drills and nonstop intervals.  P90X is a 90 day home workout program designed by Tony Horton that is a mix of strength and cardio.    Both were made to get you into some serious shape.

  • Has been known to give you a BURST of energy shortly after you find yourself laying on the floor catching your breath.

CON’s

  • It’s hard work!
  • Some equipment involved.
  • Length of Yoga X (90 minutes) is a common complaint but it works all areas of your body and you feel great afterwards.
  • Tony Horton’s humor.
  • Trying to keep up with Tony and pull-ups.  It’s his wheelhouse!

INSANITY vs. P90X – what program wins?  There is no clear answer on this unfortunately.  It all depends on your fitness goals.   I started my fitness journey with P90X so I choose it first but also really love INSANITY.    Runners and track athletes will choose INSANITY first.   The general rule of thumb is if you want your focus to be on resistance training, choose P90X.  If you want more focus on high end cardio, go the INSANITY route.  I cut off 5 inches off my waist using mostly P90X and my sister cut 15 minutes off her marathon time and qualified for the Boston Marathon by incorporating INSANITY.   Does it work?  I think so!

Yesterday’s 7K run usually doesn’t fall on exactly St. Patrick’s Day, but this year it did and it made it that much crazier as far as registration.   The weather was great!  Unusually warm weather for March in the Twin Cities!   It was a bit breezy but still warm early on and warmed up fast by the end of the shorter run.  They announced a total of over 7,000 runners were participating.    All kinds were out to partake in the festivities.  LOTS of green!

It was my first 7K.  Afterwards I was reflecting back on how far I’ve really come.  Sure, I’ve now done a couple 5K’s, and a 10K as I work towards my goal of a half marathon this year.  What is most interesting to me is the measurable increase in speed.    As the race approached starting time, I kept moving up in the chute to a faster pace time.  My goal was right at an 8:00/min pace but I felt good and wanted to go for it.    We started off and I had my music pumping and my Nike + GPS tracking my pace and time.   At the beginning I was at 7:25ish a mile but felt good so I kept it up.   I was passing quite a few people and not many were passing me.   I did start to feel the grind a bit in the middle towards the end.  A few hills gave me a test but I pushed through it and before I knew it… BAM!   There was the finish line with a time of 32:46.  I blew away my goal.  It was a great feeling.

Later I checked online for my official chiptime results and saw I finished 244th overall out of 8782 runners.   How cool is that?  This for someone that doesn’t even consider myself a runner.

I am a P90X’er at heart.  I didn’t train as much as I wanted to but felt ready for it.  Once I tackle the half marathon, it will be time to get really serious.  Without my current rigorous P90X2 schedule and over 2 years of many other Beachbody programs, I would never been able to pull it off in the same way.  It’s amazing what following a program can do.  Once you see a little progress and success, you want to push yourself more to see even better results.  On to the next challenge!
