Don’t let it be an excuse.
- “I was traveling”
- “I couldn’t bring my weights”
- “My sleep pattern was way off”
- “I was visiting family”
When you make fitness a priority in your life rather than just a short term fix, you will go out of your way to stay somewhat on track. I do still like to practice balance. If I am out of town and I plan for getting my workouts in and one day doesn’t happen, I roll with it. It’s just one day. At the same time I do plan ahead and mix up my schedule if needed to make sure i am doing some type of workout.
Today was a good example. I am traveling and did not have my weights with from my current program; Les Mills Pump. I chose to go for a run instead. The weather was perfect, with the exception of a strong wind. I didn’t need anything other than my running shoes, music and workout clothes. I also brought along my Tony Horton One on One DVD called the “Road Warrior”. It is meant for situations like these where you can still get in a workout and not have to worry about dragging all kinds of equipment with or finding a gym. It’s on my list for tomorrow.
If you’re just starting off in your workout program, or maybe even if you are in the middle of it, or you fell off the wagon or on the wagon, whatever it is. You’re just struggling or maybe you’re even having success right now, but I know at one point you’re going to hit a wall and you’re going to think, “Why am I doing this? It’s just one day. What if I don’t work out today? What if I eat junk today? You’re right, it’s only one day. No one has ever died from having a junk piece of food one day. But that one day very easily can turn into two days and three days and a week, and then you’re falling off the wagon. I think it’s off the wagon. But the key thing is, how do you prevent that?
You have to find an inner, deep down reason why you’re doing this. If it’s for someone else, it’s probably not going to work. It needs to be for you first. Maybe it’s even for your family, but you have to do something that’s strong, a strong reason why. If you’re not quite sure what that is, get yourself away from everything – all the TV, the internet, the phones and just get away from all the noise, take a few minutes and really think about that. Write it down. Writing it down on a piece of paper is very powerful. Put it in front of you wherever you go. If it’s on the phone cover that you carry around, if it’s in your car, notebook – something you see all the time so that you’re reminded of it.
When you hit that alarm clock at five o’clock, or six o’clock, you’re looking at the clock and it says, “time to get up” or beeps, or whatever it does. Don’t quit on yourself find your reason why. It’s hard to get up those days, yes it is. I’ve been there. Sometimes I don’t win. But if you keep at it and you get up that day, that day is a victory and you’re going to feel so much better. Over time it just compounds, and you look back and you’ve lost five pounds or ten pounds, or you feel more confident, you have more energy, whatever it is. All things start to fall into place. So just take it one step at a time and really know the reason why you’re doing this.
