What do Toastmasters and exercise have in common? What an interesting question. I never thought much about it in the past nor did I really know much about Toastmasters. For those of you that don’t know about it, it’s a very well-known organization with clubs across the world that provide an environment for improving your speaking and leadership skills. Exercise on the other hand, is well known but few seem to appreciate its value.
I decided to join a Toastmaster’s club back in February of 2007 to help enhance my career. I started with the intention of completing a few speeches and see where it goes. Fast forward 4 years later and I am still very much involved. I have taken on roles on the executive board of our group including president, competing in speech competitions and made some great friends and contacts.
In October of 2009, I was feeling more lethargic than I thought should be normal for a 38 year old. I saw the P90X infomercial on TV numerous times and was very curious. I decided to take some action and get into shape. I wasn’t turning back. As of today, I have completed 4 rounds of P90X, a mix of Turbo Fire, ran two 5k’s and now on my own hybrid version of P90X and INSANITY. I am down 5 inches off my waist; my energy is high and I feel great! Why else would I continue to get up early and push myself as much as I do? Results speak volumes. I then decided to pay it forward and now help others achieve their goals.
What does all of this have in common? I started each venture with some expectation but never imagined where it would lead me. Both have brought me more confidence, more opportunities, more energy, pushed me out of my comfort zone, created friendships and even presented travel opportunities. I took a chance and let it ride. Life is too short, take a leap and join a Toastmasters group or start an exercise program. Better yet, why not both! Change doesn’t happen overnight but it will happen if you keep at it over time.
